Thuya wood

Essaouira is famous for its thuya woodwork, which comes from a thuya forest nearby – one of the only places in the world where the thuya tree grows. The racines (roots) of the tree provide a rich texture with knots, while the tiges (branches) give a lovely stripey pattern to dense chestnut-coloured wood.

By the 20th century the trade had dwindled, because the local Berber chieftains were more interested in arms deals and ransoms than in trading goods, and because most Jewish families had left. The French Protectorate chose Casablanca as its commercial centre. In the 1960s Essaouira became a favourite hippy hang-out, attracting musicians like Cat Stevens and Jimi Hendrix, as well as director Orson Welles, who shot his film Othello here. Then the surfers came, drawn by the huge waves and strong winds that give the town the title of ‘Windy City of Africa’.
